Skills Occupation List. What does it all mean?

The Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection issue a Skills Occupation List (SOL) each year to help people wanting to migrate to Australia get an idea of what skills are in short supply in Australia.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection publish this comprehensive Skills Occupation List each year on their website http://www.border.gov.au/

The Skills Occupation List targets qualified people who want to migrate to Australia under a Skilled Independent subclass 189 visa, that can deliver high value skills to the Australian economy over the medium to long term.

Any independent person wanting to migrate to Australia who is not applying for an employer sponsored visa should determine if their occupation is an approved occupation on the SOL before applying for a:

  • Points based skilled migration independently (not nominated by a State or Territory government)
  • Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate visa in the graduate work stream) or
  • A family sponsored stream of the Subclass 489 Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa

If you have an occupation that is on the SOL, you can apply for a points based skilled visa and submit an expression of interest.

The main criteria for a skilled visa as stated by the Australian Immigration Department is;

  • Your profession or skill set must be on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • You must obtain a skilled assessment for the relevant occupation
  • You must be under the age of 50 years
  • The relevant points required by the Australian Immigration Department
  • Have the required level of English

As mentioned, the SOL is subject to change by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.  During this review, several occupations could be removed or added to the list.

If there is an excess supply of labour in the market for a given occupation that is currently listed on the SOL, the Government will generally remove that occupation from the SOL.
