Immigrated to Australia? How to get Australian Citizenship.

Attaining Australian Citizenship: Guide

Attaining Australian Citizenship ⇒ After completing the immigration process with a migration agent and settling into one of our vibrant communities, you might consider progressing to Australian citizenship.

Apply for Australian citizenship through the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Different requirements apply to legal spouses of Australian citizens and children born overseas to Australians.

When you migrate to Australia, you will need to fulfill the following requirements to apply for Australian citizenship:

  • be a permanent resident at the time of application and time of decision
  • meet the residence requirements
  • be of good character
  • have a basic knowledge of English
  • intend to reside or maintain a close and continuing association with Australia
  • have an adequate knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges of Australian citizenship.

To support your application, you will need to provide several documents such as:

Three documents that all together show your:

  • photograph and signature
  • current residential address
  • birth name, date of birth, and gender
  • any evidence that you have changed your name
  • an Identity declaration and photograph signed by a person with the relevant authority

Additionally, applicants must secure an overseas penal clearance certificate or an overseas police check from each country visited, providing evidence of good character.

Following the assessment of your Australian citizenship application, if the outcome is favorable, you’ll receive an invitation to a citizenship appointment. At this appointment, you will either take the citizenship test or undergo an interview.

The citizenship test is held to determine whether the applicant has:

  • a basic knowledge of the English language
  • an adequate knowledge of Australia and the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship
  • an understanding of the nature of their application.

Upon approval of your application and your citizenship test or interview, you will be required to attend a citizenship ceremony and make the Australian Citizenship Pledge within 12 months of your application being approved.

Your citizenship approval will be canceled if you do not make the Pledge within 12 months.

Once you have made the Pledge, you will be an Australian citizen and receive your citizenship certificate.
